Update from Highways England – November 2021
A64 Claxton to Flaxton
This scheme is currently in preliminary design with an outside contractor. The inclusion of the full width cycleway will require some land purchase so once the value of the scheme as a whole is known, we will bid for funding and hopefully deliver it next year.(2022)
H.E are also close to completing the feasibility stage of the A64 NMU phase 2 scheme. Although this scheme is primarily for the benefit of local resident to access bus stop facilities, it proposes the introduction of six further refuge island within the single carriageway A64, some linking to shared use footway / cycleway routes. This also carries the secondary benefit of slowing vehicles and reducing shunt collisions at junctions. This includes the crossing near Scagglethorpe, which I know has been raised as an area of concern in the past.
H.E would like to thank Ryedale Cycle Forum for their input, as this is useful when promoting these improvements. Unfortunately these schemes often take quite a long time to implement.

Many recreational cyclists will choose to avoid riding alongside busy trunk roads, and will use quiet roads instead. A locally favoured and near level option (useful for touring cyclists with heavy luggage) involves using the foot crossing suspension bridge of the River Derwent, at Huttons Ambo. This has pleasant, minor road links on either side, to both York & Malton, a distance of some 25 miles and around 3 hours leisure riding time. Part of York Road into Malton already has a shared foot and cycle path along one side, as far as Derwent Bank. The route into Malton town needs improving.
Ryedale Cycle Forum are currently preparing a suggestions document to Highways England for potential improvements to the A64 for safer cycle crossing points between York and Scarborough.

Norton to Rillington Cycle Route – incorporating the parishes of Norton, Settrington, Scagglethorpe and Rillington.
As a result of higher standards and road changes the cycle route along the A64 after Brambling Fields and into Rillington requires improvement. The track is too narrow in parts and poorly signed, one section by the A64 is unsafe and needs a barrier. This is currently being considered by Highways England but not yet funded or prioritised.

We are also aware of a quirk regarding the speed limit in Scagglethorpe. As you come off the A64 into the village the speed limit does not start until the Ham and Cheese Pub, which means the cycle route has to cross a road in which traffic could be conceivably be travelling 50mph. We are advocating a reduced speed limit sign is positioned at the turn into the village.

A64 Project Ideas Currently On Hold
A1 Hazelwood Castle Bridge
Highways England (H.E.) completed a feasibility study and some early preliminary design work on this structure, but the cost estimate is prohibitively expensive. Consequently, this scheme is on hold, although the scheme is considered as a high priority should additional funding become available. Another consequence of this is that H.E. haven’t yet looked in detail at the potential crossing near Barton le Willows.
H.E. recently had a meeting with the major projects team who are generating proposals for the A64 Hopgrove dualling. We discussed a recent small scheme we’d completed near Jinnah restaurant near Harton. From this discussion, the team agreed to incorporate an NMU (non motorised users) bridge in this area in their proposals.

The times I have used the cycle track from Malton to Rillington, the crossing at Scagglethorpe is not the easiest (I imagine this is many times harder if people are cycling with young families). If highways could extend the cycle track on the Scagglethorpe side of the road around the corner into Rillington it would make the crossing point (maybe at the crossroads in Rillington at the traffic lights – where the traffic is a lot slower). The traffic is moving at 60 mph or more in both directions at the crossing point at Scagglethorpe which isn’t the best situation.

It isn’t just that from Norton. The section from Scarborough Road to Brambling Fields needs work. Really busy with cars there. Use the Active Travel Suggestions form on the northyorks gov uk site to submit suggestions for this.
